Court remands man for alleged stealing, attempted murder

THE Enugu East Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, remanded Martin Ogadi, 34, in a correctional facility for alleged stealing and attempted murder.

The Magistrate, Mrs Uche Mogbo, remanded the defendant, saying her court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

She, however, ordered the prosecution to send the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

She adjourned the case to Nov. 22 to await the DPP’s advice.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, ASP Reuben Ihejiobi, told the court that the matter was reported at Abakpa Police Station on Oct. 22 by the Complainant, Mrs Grace Okoh.

He told the court the defendant, who hails from Enugu East Local Government Area, allegedly stole N257,000 cash, goods worth N45,000 from Silver and Gold Hotel, Abakpa Nike and attempted to kill the Complainant, Okoh, with wooden pestle.

Ihejiobi alleged that the defendant also stole a mobile cell phone worth N36,000; MB3 worth N3,000; a male shirt worth N6,000; and another phone which price was still unknown from the hotel.

He said the defendant also allegedly attempted to kill the complainant, hitting both her head and mouth with a wooden pestle, causing her grievous injuries.

According to the prosecutor, the offences committed by the defendant are punishable under Sections 353 and 275 of the Criminal Code, Cap 30, VOL. II Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria 2004
