House help bags 4 months imprisonment for stealing employer’s jewelry worth N462,550

A Wuse Zone 6 Chief Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, on Friday sentenced a house help, Halima Idris, to four months imprisonment for stealing jewelry, wristwatches valued at N462,550, and 1,400 dollars cash.

The Magistrate, Mr Ahmed Ndajiwo, convicted Idris as she pleaded guilty.

The court, however, gave the convict an option of N50,000 fine.

The convict was charged on a count charge bordering on theft by servant.

Ndajiwo said that the light punishment was because Idris saved the court the agony of prolonged trial as she pleaded guilty.

He said that the punishment would serve as deterrent to other would be offenders.

Earlier, the prosecuting counsel, Mr Fidelis Ogbobe, told the court that the convict committed the offence on July 23.

Ogbobe said that the case was lodged at the Police Divisional Headquarters, Galadimawa, Abuja, by Mr. Okpe Effiong of No 9, Liverpool St., Sun City Estate, Abuja.

He said that Idris went into her employer’s (Effiong) bedroom and stole a set of gold jewelry, ring, necklace with pendant, three wristwatches valued at N462,550, 1,400 dollars and ran away to an unknown destination.

Ogbobe said that Idris was apprehended during police investigation and a set of gold ring was recovered from her.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 289 of the Penal Code.

He prayed the court to try the convict summarily under Section 347 of the Administration of Criminal Justices Act, 2015, because of her admission of guilt.(NAN)
