NAJEEM Salaam, the Speaker of Osun House of Assembly, says the June 12 date has become a symbol of democratic value with the recognition accorded it by the Federal Government.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Mr Goke Butika, in a statement on Tuesday in Osogbo quoted Salaam as saying that the spirit of June 12 had taught people how to summon courage by using their votes.
He charged Nigerians to be vigilant, saying “ men of yester-years who pushed Nigeria to the edge have not rested on their oars.’’
“What this nation needs is a honest leadership that would manage the nation’ resources judiciously as personified by the duo of President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
“We can’t afford to listen to the fabrications of corrupt people who once plundered the coffers of this nation for they are only struggling to return this country to proverbial Egypt,’’ he said.
He commended Gov. Rauf Aregbesola for declaring a holiday in the state to mark June 12, saying the state government had always demonstrated progressive tendency.
Salaam also lauded the president for his June 12 declaration, saying it had brought recognition to the significance of the election in the political lexicon of the country.
He further commended the president for honouring the winner of the election, late MKO Abiola , and renowned human rights crusader, late Gani Fawehinmi.
