FORMER President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Mamman Nasir has appealed to Nigerians to do their best to ensure that the country remained peaceful and united.
Justice Nasir said this on Wednesday in Kaduna at an Annual Memorial Lecture organised by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Foundation.
“Am appealing to you all to do your best in order to get peace, Sir Ahmadu Bello did his best for peace.
“I encourage everyone to emulate our fore fathers. Let us try to elect suitable people who will manage the nation well to sustain its unity and peace.
“Once we get the leadership right, excellence will follow. I urge us all to go out and preach peace and unity for Nigeria so that our future generation can have a better country,” he said.
Nasir who is also the Galadiman Katsina and District Head of Malumfashi, encouraged all Nigerians to always appreciate Sir Ahmadu Bello, the late premier of Northern region, and do their best for the people and the country at large.
In his remarks, Prof. Ango Abdullahi said that there was need for elders in the Northern part of the country to sit down and sort out the challenges in the region.
” We the leaders of the north have the responsibility to help tackle the challenges.
“If we the leaders really sit up and insist that things must be done well, I don’t think we will be having the difficulties of today,” he said
According to him, the crisis of governance in the country is the abandonment of responsibilities.
” Sometimes I ask myself if we have a constitution that is respected and followed, which is the real problem on ground,” he said.
Abdullahi said it was evident and very clear that the presidential system of government was not working as expected because it failed to produce the kind of leaders needed in the country.
He added that the presidential system of government was expensive and corruption prone.
Also, Bishop Ideowu Fearon, Secretary General, Anglican Diocese, said that both Islam and Christianity were very clear as far as leadership was concerned.
Fearon said what the country needed was people that would lead with the fear of God, devoid of sentiment.
“We need leaders who will follow the constitution of the country; we don’t want leaders based on religious sentiments, what we need are good leaders.
” Let politicians stop deceiving us with religion and ethnicity, we need honest leaders,” he said
