THE Kano State government, on Tuesday, said it had completed arrangements for the integration of primary eye care into its Primary Health Care (PHC) in 12 local government areas of the state.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the state Primary Health Management Board, Mr Maikudi Marafa, in Kano.

Marafa quoted the Commissioner for Health, Dr Aminu Tsanyawa, as stating this at the closing of a two-week primary eye care training for primary health care workers.

He also said that the government had signed an MoU with Al-Basar International Foundation Trust (Makka Specialists Eye Hospital) for the implementation of the project.

Tsanyawa stated that the programme was conceived by the present administration to tackle rampant cases of eye problem from the grassroots.

The commissioner also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to giving priority to the health sector for the wellbeing of the people of the state.

The Executive Secretary, Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board, Dr Tijjani Hussain, said that 12 PHC centres had been selected for the programme.

He listed the PHC centres to include those in Nasarawa, Gwale, Garun Malam, Sumaila, Ajingi, Dawakin Tofa, Makoda, Kibiya, Rogo, Bagwai, Tsanyawa and Warawa council areas.

“Government will renovate and provide furniture and fittings at the 12 selected PHC centres and conduct regular monitoring and supervision of those centres.”

“The state will also provide basic eye equipment in six out of the 12 selected centres for the primary eye centres, while Al-Basar International Foundation will provide basic eye equipment for the remaining six centres, as contained in the MoU,” he said.

Commenting on the partnership, the Regional Managing Director of Al Basar International Foundation, Mr Muhyiddeen Abdallah, said that the foundation had trained 36 PHC workers from the 12 primary health care centres.

He stated that they would also conduct a bi-annual free eye screening at all the selected primary health care centres.

Abdallah further stressed that the foundation would also develop a referral system for ophthalmic cases, in collaboration with the state government.

While commending the state government for the gesture, the regional manager assured of successful implementation of the memorandum. (NAN)
