MR Isma’il Dikko, Director-General, Kaduna State Urban Planning Development Authority (KASUPDA) says they will not shy away from demolition unsafe structures in any part of the state in the interest of public safety.
Dikko stated this in a statement on Monday in Kaduna while reacting to the collapse of a building in Zaria that the authority had earlier marked as unsafe.
He however said that before doing that, the authority will always advise contractors and developers to to rectify any anomaly so as to avert building collapse or any mishap in the future.
Dikko said that the measure was not to punish developers, but help everyone in the society by making every building safe, thereby benefitting owners and users.
The D-G recalled that when KASUPDA first issued an abatement notice and subsequently issued quit notice on the collapsed house located at Nagoyi area in Zaria city, there was negative reaction towards its officials.
Dikko explained that KASUPDA issued the abatement notice after its Monitoring and Compliance department noticed some structural defects on the building.
He added that following the refusal of the owners to comply, the authority had to issue a quit notice, which was ignored by the occupants.
According to the D-G, the collapse of the building has led people around the neighbourhood who earlier insulted the staff to turn around in praise of KASUPDA.
‘’While we commiserate with the victims, KASUPDA is once again appealing to property owners to ensure they get a building plan and all necessary documents before commencing any project,’’ he added.
The director-general assured that KASUPDA officials were always ready to assist developers, contractors and prospective house-owners with technical advice.
“We are here to serve the good people of Kaduna state in line with Gov. Nasir El-Rufai’s vision of making Kaduna state great again,” he added. (NAN)
