IN what could be described as a test for the 2019 battle, the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, held rallies in Daura, the hometown of President Muhammadu Buhari in Katsina State, on Thursday.
While the APC drummed support for Ahmad Baba-Kaita, its Katsina North Senatorial District candidate, the PDP wooed the crowd in favour of Kabir Babba-Kaita.
Coincidentally, the two candidates in the election scheduled for Saturday are brothers.
On the APC side were Acting President Yemi Osinbajo; APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomole; Governor Bello Masari of Katsina State; and Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano state.
The former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso; Sule Lamido, ex-governor of Jigawa State; and Ibrahim Shema, a former governor of Katsina State were on ground for PDP.
The Katsina State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Independent National Electoral Commission, Mr. Jibrin Zarewa, has said that over 800,000 electorate are expected to vote in the bye-election for the Katsina North Senatorial District scheduled for Saturday (today).
The seat became vacant following the death of Senator Mustapha Bukar, who died in April after a brief illness.
The REC also pointed out that voting would take place in 1,577 polling units spread across the 12 local government areas that make the senatorial zone.
Meanwhile, when our correspondent visited the INEC headquarters, located on Daura Road, on Friday, the premises was full of activities as many ad hoc staff dominated the premises.
One of them, who refused to give his name, said they were awaiting further instructions, after which they would depart for their respective duty posts.
Zarewa had earlier disclosed that 7,727 ad hoc staff, including corps members, students of tertiary institutions and staff of federal ministries and agencies, would be engaged for the exercise.
Six candidates from six political parties, including two siblings, are contesting the election. – Punch
