THE Kebbi House of Assembly, has passed the State Electricity Regulatory Commission, 2024 Bill into law, to regulate electricity in the state.
This development followed the consideration of a report from the House Committee on Rural and Community Development, presented during the assembly’s plenary session on Thursday.
Presenting the report, the Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Faruku Abubakar, (APC-Suru), reminded members of the house that the bill scaled through first and second readings and unanimously committed to the committee for further actions on Aug. 20.
The bill, he said, would promote access to electricity through increased private sector and public investments as well as private partnerships in grid, mini-grid and other off-grid electricity options.
According to him, also, the options of the electricity will be through the use of renewable and non renewable energy sources in the state.
“The committee had studied the bill which comprises 120 sections and a schedule.
“In the process of scrutinising the bill, relevant stakeholders were invited for public hearing which was conducted on Tuesday, Sept. 24,” he said.
Abubakar thanked all the stakeholders, who participated in the public hearing and provided both written and oral inputs to contribute to the success of the report.
Alhaji Muhammad Sani (APC- Augie), presented the motion of the bill for third reading, which was seconded by Alhaji Umar Na’amore (APC-Argungu).
The Speaker of the house, Muhammad Usman (APC-Zuru), who presided over the plenary session, put the motion to a voice vote, and the lawmakers unanimously adopted the amendment of the bill.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the electricity regulation commission’s mandate covers electricity generation, transmission, system operation, distribution and supply. (NAN)
