Stephen Keshi, former Nigerian skipper and immediate past coach of Super Eagles, has dragged the Nigeria Football Federation to court, claiming N1.2 billion for his dismissal by the federation

STEPHEN Keshi, sacked Super Eagles coach, has dragged the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, to court for wrongful dismissal and defamation of character. According to a letter from Keshi’s lawyers submitted to the NFF on Friday, July 24, Keshi is said to be demanding for more than $5million (about N1.2billion) compensation for “wrongful dismissal and defamation.”

Keshi was sacked, on July 4, a few weeks after leading the Super Eagles to a 2-0 victory over Chad as they opened the Nigeria its Afcon 2017 qualifying campaign in Kaduna.

The NFF said he was found guilty of misconduct by a panel set up to investigate him recommended his dismissal. In announcing Keshi’s sack, the NFF alleged that was disloyal to the federation because while working as Super Eagles coach, he also applied for the vacant Cote d’Ivoire coaching job.

“Having thoroughly reviewed the reports/findings of the NFF Disciplinary Committee and NFF Technical and Development Committee, as well as having reviewed the actions and inactions of Mr. Stephen Keshi, in the performance of his duties as Super Eagles’ head coach, which we found to lack the required commitment to achieve the Federation’s objectives as set out in the coach’s employment contract,” an official statement on the NFF’s official website said, adding: “To this end, the Nigeria Football Federation has decided to exercise its option to summarily terminate the employment contract of Mr. Stephen Keshi with the Federation with immediate effect.”

It was the latest split in a turbulent relationship shared by the NFF and Keshi, who was first appointed in 2011 but resigned two years later, only to quickly reverse his decision.

Keshi has since been replaced by Sunday Oliseh, his former team mate.
