KNSG lauds EU, UNICEF for interventions in education sector

THE Kano Government has commended the European Union (EU) and United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) for their interventions in the education sector in the state.

The Commissioner of Education, Alhaji Umar Doguwa, gave the commendation during a two-day training of education stakeholders on school safety, psychosocial support and climate literacy  in Kano.

Represented by the Director of educational support services, Hajiya Halima Tukur, the commissioner also acknowledged the impactful intervention of UNICEF though the EU-EYE intervention in the education sector in the country.

“Your efforts have significantly and vividly improved access to quality education for many children, particularly those in underserved communities, by addressing challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, teacher trainings, and gender disparities in education.

“The positive changes resulting from your initiatives will undoubtedly have a long- term effect on the lives of children and the overall development of the state.

“Your commitment to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn and thrive is commendable,” he explained.

He urged the participants in the training to focus and contribute to the safety and emotional well-being and future preparedness of students.

According to him, the training will equip them with the tools to create learning environments where students will feel secure and protected.

“You will also be better prepared to help your students navigate emotional and social challenges especially when facing problems.Your ability to recognize and address these challenges will greatly influence their mental health and academic success,” he explained.

The commissioner noted that the understanding of climate change was vital in educating the next generation about sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Doguwa also restated the state governments commitment to improve and revamp the education sector in the state.

Earlier, Hajiya Aisha Abdullahi, the state education facilitator, Education and Youth Empowerment (EYE) said that the training was organised by EYE a European Union (EU)-funded programme, supported by UNICEF in North-West.

Abdullahi said the four-year programme, which commenced from October 2023 to August 2027, would cover Kano, Jigawa and Sokoto states.

According to her, the Training of the Trainers (ToT) will be followed by step-down training to schools in 10 selected local government of Kano.

She said, “We have started this exercise with the training of ToT; they are the master trainers.

“The master trainers will go down to step-down the training to teachers across the schools in 10 Local government areas of the state,” he said.(NAN)
