MR. Kingsley Fanwo, the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, on Monday, called on Youths in the country to embrace agriculture and vocational trades to avoid over-dependence on the government for employment.

Fanwo said, rather than wait on the government for the unavailable white-collar jobs, youths should take to agriculture, learn trades and engage in other vocations to be self-employed and generate job opportunities for others.

The Commissioner made the call at an award ceremony organized by Kogi Youth Alliance (KYA)on Monday, in Lokoja.

He said the call became imperative as the prevailing economic situation in the country had made white-collar jobs illusive.

Fanwo, who was represented by Mr Abereoran Olusegun, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Yahaya Bello, on Public Relations, said agriculture and vocational trades remained the only options for the survival of the Nigerian Youth.

On the high level of insecurity ravaging the nation, the commissioner admonished the youth to shun acts inimical to the peaceful co-existence of Nigerians and the development of the nation.

Speaking earlier, the President of the Group, Olufemi Temitope, said the Youth Alliance decided to confer awards of excellence on 11 citizens of Kogi, who distinguished themselves through philanthropy.

According to him, their contributions ranged from grassroots development to humanitarian services, for an improved standard of living for the people.

“This is a yearly program of the Youth Alliance, which started as far back as 1992 to give honor to whom it is due, in terms of their contributions to the well-being of the society.

“As youths, we need to appreciate those who are out in full force to uplift the living standard of the less privileged in the society,“ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the youth were treated to a lecture on, “The Role of Youths in Nation Building, Especially Under Depressed Economy.”

The lecture was delivered by Mr. Michael Abuh, Publisher of The Nigeria Post Newspaper.

The 11 beneficiaries of the award include; Engr. Bisi Ojuola, Engr. Philip Oloruntoba and Mrs. Peace Joe.

Others are; Mrs Fatima Suleiman, Mr. J.O. Alomati, Engr Kehinde Adekonyin, Berikisu Sani, Elder J. Olarewaju, Deji Ajare, Hon S.O. Adeleye, and Mr. and Mrs. Ayodele. (NAN)
