Kogi House of Assembly Removes Speaker
Political Briefs

THE Kogi State House of Assembly, on Thursday, December 10, removed Momoh Jimoh-Lawal as speaker along with Ali Akuh, his deputy, and Hassan Bello, minority leader.
Jimoh-Lawal was impeached over allegations of incompetence in the running of the affairs of the assembly.
Addressing pressmen in Lokoja, John Abbah, chairman of the House committee on information, said that the action of “17 members” of the assembly to remove Jimoh-Lawal as speaker should not be seen as novel, but imperative, in view of the demand to remove the speaker before now.
Abbah said that there had been previous moves to remove Jimoh-Lawal as speaker, but that they had been managing him, stating that when the 17 members could no longer manage him and others, they had no option but to move against them.
Abbah, who is the new deputy speaker, said that Jimoh-Lawal was removed because of his incompetence, greed and betrayal of members.
New members have also been elected into the vacancies created by the removal of the three officials. They include Godwin Osuyi, speaker; John Abbah, deputy speaker and Eneche Ojochemenemi Linus, minority leader.
Osuyi, in his address, said the change in the leadership of the House had nothing to do with the political situation in the state. He pointed out that any of the 25 assembly members was capable of being speaker of the House, and that if any was not competent, such could be removed.
Thereafter, the House adjourned to December 16.
