MR Kolapo Kola-Daisi, the Accord senatorial candidate for Oyo South, has pledged support to traders in the state, if elected.
He made the pledge on Tuesday while meeting with executive members of all the traders’ associations in Ibadan North-East Local Government and Iso Adiye in Molete area.
The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that Kola-Daisi had, at the two separate meetings, reiterated the importance of empowering market traders with fitting financial instruments.
Kola-Daisi described market men and women as major stakeholders who make the economy work, and this was a major reason they must be empowered, to benefit all citizens.
He said that market traders play an irreplaceable role in driving socioeconomic development with their market activities.
“I thank you for all you’ve said and requested today. My experience in raising funds for businesses makes me understand your real needs and role you play in driving development.
“The activities of market men and women serve as a backbone of any thriving economy. When your businesses are buoyant, the society at all layers will feel it.
“And when it is not buoyant as you have mostly complained today, the economy, and by extension, the society will suffer for it,” he said.
The senatorial candidate promised that he would not engage in cosmetic empowerment programmes that traders do not need, if elected.
“You do not need Okada, neither do you need those deep freezer kinds of empowerment. What you need is fitting financial support to sufficiently empower your trade and businesses.
“You need money to trade, money to expand and scale your businesses to an extent you become employers of labour too.
“This is key in my plans for you all and we will achieve it. We will give you, our market men and women, the real empowerment you deserve,” Kola-Daisi promised.
He thanked the market men and women for declaring unflinching support for his candidacy.
NAN reports that some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from three wards in the Local Government area stormed the meeting to annpunce their defection to Accord.
They also declared their support for the senatorial candidate in his bid to be victorious in the 2023 general elections.(NAN)
