KREMLIN spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday that more clarification is needed on who is to represent Russia at the summit on the situation in the Gaza Strip, which will be held on October 21 in Cairo.
The Al Qahera News broadcaster reported on Thursday that 31 country and three international organizations had confirmed their participation in the summit on the situation in the Gaza Strip.
“I cannot tell you now. I need to clarify this. And I recommend checking with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” Peskov told reporters.
Earlier in the day, reports emerged that European Council President Charles Michel and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell will join Cairo Peace Summit on behalf of the European Union.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will also attend the Oct. 21 summit in Cairo, the official presidential website announced on Friday.
Earlier, the South African president repeatedly called for the termination of the Gaza conflict, urging the global community to support an inclusive process towards the creation of a “lasting and durable peace” that would ensure the calm existence of a “viable Palestinian State” alongside Israel.
On Friday, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa announced her two-day trip to Egypt’s capital to participate in the Peace Summit.
On Oct. 7, Hamas launched a surprise large-scale rocket attack against Israel from the Gaza Strip and breached the border, killing and abducting people in neighboring Israeli communities.
Israel launched retaliatory strikes and ordered a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, home to more than 2 million people, cutting off supplies of water, food and fuel.
Thousands of deaths and injuries have been reported on both sides as a result of the escalation. (Sputnik/NAN)
