THE Kwara Government has adopted mining strategy to develop various communities in the state.
The Commissioner for Finance, Mrs Olasumbo Oyeyemi, disclosed this on Tuesday in Ilorin during a nationwide monitoring exercise on revenue collection from the Nigeria mining sector by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).
She said that the state government would collaborate with the private sector and relevant stakeholders in the mining industry to develop various hosts communities.
Oyeyemi therefore solicited the support and cooperation of the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, saying that government has repositioned the mining sector for improved productivity.
The commissioner added that the present administration has done a lot to restrategies mining sector by reducing suffering of hosts communities in the state.
She underscored the need for government and stakeholders to make positive gains in the activities of miners in order to improve the wellbeing of the communities and state at large.
On her part, the Commissioner for Solid Minerals, Mrs Heriat Oshetimehin, said that the present government has taken bold steps to correct past mistakes in the mining sector in the state.
She expressed government resolve to grow the mining sector in the state by introducing Community Development Agreement (CDA) to enrich the sector.
She assured RMAFC that the administration of Malam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara was determined to end illegal mining activities and resolved that miners can’t be cheating again because “you can’t be mining without the consent of the head of villages/communities”.
“All the policies, programmes and strategies have been put in place by government on minerals development in the state.
“So we are now having collaboration with stakeholders for public, private partnership for the implementation of all policies, regulations and strategies that have been put in place,” said the commissioner.
Earlier, the Director, Mobilisation and Diversification in Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, Mr Kamar Oyeneyin, said the commission has commence 2022 nationwide monitoring of revenue collections and activities of miners in the state.
He said the move was part of the drive to harness the vast revenue potential in the solid minerals and mining sector of the economy.
He noted that the ongoing interactive meeting with stakeholders in the mining sector in the state and government officials was in line with nationwide monitoring of revenue collections and activities of miners in the state.
He explained that the commission was empowered to monitor all revenue accruals from the extractive industries (oil, gas and minerals) with a view to ensuring prompt and accurate remittance to the Federation Account.
He said the exercise was to enable the commission follow up, verify and reconcile revenue collections in the mining sector, especially on the liabilities established by Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency (NEITI) in its 2022 Audit Report. (NAN)
