KWARA Government has begun the evacuation of illegal dump sites across Ilorin metropolis to sustain a clean and hygienic environment in the state.
Mr Shehu Ndanusa, State Commissioner for Environment, said this while speaking with newsmen during the evacuation process on Thursday in Ilorin.
He said that the evacuation was necessitated after it had severally warned residents to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
Ndanusa said that the evacuation began with the illegal dump site at Ilupeju Community, Sango/Kulende axis, Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara.
He added that it would be extended to other areas of the state subsequently.
“Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has approved the evacuation of illegal dump sites across Ilorin metropolis, to restore a clean and hygienic environment.
“Also, to promote healthy living, especially now that the rainy season has begun, to ensure that we get rid of any source of hazard to the people,” he said.
The commissioner cautioned residents to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse, and use of vehicles to convey high volume of refuse into the waste bins.
He said that such acts were contrary to the environmental laws of the state, adding that the exercise would continue, until Kwara got rid of illegal dump sites.
Ndanusa advised residents to engage the services of commercial waste collectors in disposing their refuse.
The commissioner urged residents to cultivate a healthy living habit, both at home and in their workplaces.
He appreciated individuals and corporate organisations who had joined hands with the current administration and appealed for more robust relationships at sustaining a clean and hygienic environment. (NAN)
