MR Mimshach Obioha, Project Director, Ventures Platform Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) says lack of commitment is a major hindrance to the success of most government funded projects.

Obioha told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in an interview on Wednesday in Abuja that most government projects fail because the people involved lacked the commitment to see them through.

He said that his organisation was engaged in tracking the growth and progress of small businesses funded by government under the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP).

He said that commitment to success would be guaranteed when people were made to know that they were co-owners and stakeholders of any government-funded project.

He said that commitment could be achieved when entrepreneurs were well mentored through the social investment programme to ensure that they were guided to be committed to the success of their businesses.

“The problem with government projects is commitment, you find that as soon as people get funding from government they divert it to other unprofitable ventures and you don’t hear about the project again.

“In venture foundation working in collaboration with the Office of the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, we link entrepreneurs with experts in their areas of specialisation to mentor them.
“Also we put in monitoring mechanisms to using digital tools like text messages, Whatsapp, Facebook and other social media apps to check on their progress.

“With all these measures, we ensure that any project chosen to be funded by social investment programme got the utmost attention that enforces commitment on the part of the beneficiaries,’’ he said.

Obioha, therefore, called for the same kind of follow up on other projects by government to achieve maximum success and reduce waste in government’s scarce revenue.

He said the vision of the organisation is to create inclusive and sustainable wealth in Africa by building the capacity of African entrepreneurs and innovators to create sustainable solutions to the most urgent problems in the country. (NAN)
