Ladi Bala urges female journalists to report responsibly

LADI Bala, president of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), has enjoined female journalists to report responsibly and shun brown-envelope journalism which undermines objective reporting and professionalism. Bala also described the just-ended training for female journalists in Nigeria as a promise made and fulfilled for its members, whom she referred to as NAWOJIANS.
Bala made the statement at the just concluded two-day skill enhancement and capacity building/mentoring session for female journalists organised by the International Press Centre, IPC, in collaboration with European Union, EU, from November 7 to 8, in Hotel Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria.
Delivering her address, Bala charged participants to report responsibly the kind of story that will uplift society and to always remember that women are the ones to midwife pertinent issues of concern to society as the future also lies in their hands.
She noted that while journalists have done a good job reporting well on the 2023 electoral election, they can do more and be focused on reports issues that would enhance the credibility of the electoral process.
Advising against “brown envelope” journalism, the president enjoined journalists to be objective in the writing their stories without exaggerating the problems but offer credible service and well-thought-out solutions.
According to the NAWOJ president, journalists must rise to protect and strengthen Nigeria’s democracy in the build-up to the 2023 general election.
Realnews reports that the training which was to prepare female journalists for the coverage of the 2023 elections was for journalists from South South, South East, and South West of the country. They are to utilise the opportunity to learn new skills that will improve will improve their capacities and enhance the quality of news reports.
