Lagos, Delta, Ogun, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Imo, top list of domestic debtors

THE Domestic Debt Data Report for the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory 2023 shows that Lagos, Delta, Ogun, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Imo states are the biggest domestic debtors in the country.

According to the Domestic Debt Stock figures released by the Debt Management Office, DMO on Sunday, the figures were generated from the signed-off received from the 36 States of the Federation as at March 31, except for Benue and Kano States which were as at December 31, 2022, Katsina and Taraba States were as at September 30, 2022, while that of Rivers State was as at September 30, 2021 debt.

The figures showed that Lagos State is leading with N812.383 billion debt, followed by Delta State with N421.776 billion, Ogun State with N293.204 billion and, Rivers State with N225.505 billion, Akwa Ibom State with N206.643 billion, and Imo State with N202.551 billion.

Others are Cross-River; N196.266 billion, Oyo N161.730, billion, Plateau State; N148.122 billion, Osun N147. 052 billion, Bauchi N144.542 billion, Benue N141.294 billion, Bayelsa N140.028 billion, Gombe State N134.888 billion and Adamawa State with 130.978 billion.

Following closely behind are Edo State with N126.441 billion, Kano N122.361 billion, Niger N121.418 billion, Ekiti N114.251 billion, Kwara State N108.325 billion, Abia State N99.541 billion,  Zamfara N98.054 billion, Borno N94.825 billion, Sokoto N93.707 billion, Enugu State N92.688 billion, Kogi  N91.464 billion, Yobe N88.806 billion, Taraba N87.959 billion, FCT N84.773 billion, Kaduna N80.611 billion, Anambra N77.088 billion, Ebonyi N75.838 billion, Ondo State N75.505 billion, Nasarawa N71.445 billion, Katsina N62.374 billion, Kebbi N60.942 billion, while Jigawa is the lowest debtor with N43.592 billion.

According to the DMO report, the total domestic debt figure for the 36 states and the FCT is N5,478,993,586,058.81.
