THE Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, on Tuesday said that structured plans were in place to develop existing tourism sites in the state to international standard.
Akinbile-Yusuf stated this at a two-day working summit tagged: “The Best of Lagos” organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture in Lagos.
Akinbile-Yusuf said that the ministry had discovered new tourism sites in Badagry and Epe, adding that it had put in place structured plans to develop the existing sites to international standard.
“Specifically, in April this year, I led officials of the Ministry to discover new tourism sites in Badagry and Epe.
“We have plans in place to visit other parts of the state with the intention of not only discovering new tourism sites but also putting structured plans in place to develop the existing sites to international standard,” she said.
The commissioner said the ministry was creating a Tourism Desk in all local councils areas across the state in order to develop domestic tourism.
She explained that with the creation of tourism desks, it would be easier for the ministry to take inventory of the various tourism sites in these localities and make provisions for them.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Fatai Oluwa, Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Tourism, Arts and Culture, said it visited all monument sites in the state for upgrading to international standard.
Oluwa assured that all reports and recommendations from the summit would be worked upon for approval by the state House of Assembly.
Similarly, Dr Adun Okupe, a Tourism Advisory Consultant, urged Lagos government to train tour operators and tour guides who were the frontliners in order to arouse and sustain the interest of potential tourists.
Okupe stressed the need for the state government to upgrade the tourism sites to international standard for the advancement of the economy and to generate more revenue.
She called on government to work on orienting and improving the people’s perspective to see Lagos as a tourist centre. (NAN)
