MR Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, has called for a system that would regulate the practice of journalism in Nigeria to stop proliferation in the profession.

Obasa made the call in Lagos on Wednesday, shortly after he was decorated as the Grand Patron of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Lagos State chapter.

The speaker said: “Journalism is noble and one of the oldest professions in the world, and it should go beyond the association, as the key of the profession is `truth and objectivity.

“You must look inward to fish out the fakes amongst you, because with time, they may rub you off, as it will be difficult to recognize the bad eggs amongst you.

“It is unfortunate that those blackmailers calling themselves ‘journalists’, have been extorting people with baseless allegations, and there is no solution to sanction them,” he said.

Obasa, commending NAWOJ executives for recognizing his good work at the legislative arm of government, promised to look into their demands and support them where possible.

Earlier, Mrs Adeola Ekine, Chairperson, NAWOJ Lagos chapter, said the speaker was honored by the association in the spirit of the celebration of 2021 International Women’s Day.

Ekine said that the speaker deserved the title of the Grand Patron because of his commitment to the welfare of women and children.

She said several bills beneficial to women and children, such as the six months maternity leave for breastfeeding mothers, were sponsored and passed under the leadership of the speaker.

“The purpose of the visit is to brief you on the activities of the association and seek your support for its events and projects while fostering a working relationship with your office,’’ Ekine said. (NAN)
