GOV. Simon Lalong of Plateau has called on more women to participate in the game of golf.

The governor made the call during the closing ceremony of the ninth Northern Open Tournament organised by the Ladies Golfers Association of Nigeria (LGAN) on Sunday in Jos.

Lalong, represented by Sam Damla, the Director-General, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the state, noted that there is a huge revolution as more women now develop interest in playing the game.

”Golf promotes peace and friendship.

”Now there is a huge revolution in the game of golf in Nigeria. More women have taken golf as part of life.

”So, this competition will not only promote the game, but it will make the golfing environment gender-friendly

”So, I’m using this opportunity to call on more women to participate in this game for their self and that of golfing environment,” he said.

Lalong commended LGAN for bridging the gender inequality gap hitherto existing in the game of golf, thanking the association also for the choice of Plateau for the competition.

”It goes to further show that peace has returned to our state,” he added.

Juliet Monyei-Inyere, LGAN President, later said the competition was aimed at boosting the spirit of golf among women in the country’s northern part.

Monyei-Inyere, represented by Zainab Sambo, Financial Secretary of LGAN, noted that the competition had remained moribund for more than six years.

“But the tournament has now been revived to stimulate more women, particularly the younger ones to play golf.

“It will promote the game in all nooks and crannies of the society,” she said.

Elizabeth Samuel, Lady Captain of Jaji golf club, who emerged overall winner of the competition, thanked LGAN for organising the tournament.

She added that it would stimulate more women into playing the game.(NAN)
