THE Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB), and SLOT Systems Ltd., on Friday, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to train and build youths on hardware and software service engineers.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ms. Moronke Azeez, LASTVEB’s Executive Secretary, and Mr. Jonathan Uzomba, Head, Marketing and Communication, SLOT Systems Ltd., signed the MoU in Lagos. Azeez said that the partnership between the two organizations was to develop the skills of interested youths in software and hardware engineering in computers and any technical skills. “This partnership is implemented by GIZ Nigeria, under the “Skills for Works Programmes” which are for short vocational intensive courses to create employment and development of small businesses. “We will give the opportunity to 60 percent of female and 40 percent male youths to participate in the course. “The reason we are focusing more on females is to encourage them and they should not believe that software and hardware engineering is only for males. “We hope that by the end of the nine months program, participants will have developed and built their skills, then move to SLOT to do their apprenticeship and then start their own business,” she said.

Azeez further said that interested youths should register by getting information from their website, adding that the training was being done for free. “One of the aims is to deliver employable skills to citizens of the state because LASTVEB has the mandate to oversee technical and vocational education. “Currently, we have five technical colleges in the state which consists of over 8,000 students between the ages of 15 and 18 years old,” she said. Also, Uzomba said that SLOT trains young people in technical skills, software and hardware engineering in different states. “We have trained over 2,000 young people and they are all employed by becoming their own bosses. “The participants should be expecting quality and professional training at the completion of the project,’’ the head of marketing said. He noted that the company’s track records were recognized by GIZ Nigeria which initiated the partnering. Uzomba added that participants should use the training to acquire technical skills that would endure. (NAN)
