LASUED students ready for global sports competitions – director

DR. Adeniyi Jimmy, Director of Sports, Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), says students of the university are ready for sports competitions within and outside Nigeria.
The director gave the assurance at a games competition between the two campuses of the university – Ijanikin and Epe – on Monday.
He said that LASUED had been exposing its students to sports competition such as West Africa University Games.
“At the last West Africa University Games held at the Obafemi Awolowo University, three of our students represented the institution and won four medals.
“This month, we have also registered our students for the forthcoming FASU Games holding at Lagos State University and University of Lagos, starting from Sept. 20,” he said.
The director said that Monday’s competition was between NCE students and undergraduates of the institution.
“Our institution was transmuted from college of education to university.
“The students are participating in different games such as football, basketball, scramble, chess,volleyball, badminton, judo and taekwondo.
“The management supported with more coaches, equipment. Currently, our sports centre is undergoing a facelift which has been motivating students.
“Recently, we got some games equipment from Lagos State Trust Fund which has contributed to sports development in the university,” he said.
He said that 118 students were participating from Epe Campus of the university while 126 students were from the main campus, Ijanikin.
“I urge governments, managements and investors to support us with more sporting aids, funding and infrastructure such as a mini stadium, swimming pool and so on.
Mrs Yetunde Balogun, Deputy Director of Sport at LASUED, said that sporting activities could be used to curb vices.
Balogun said that engaging students in sports would improve their intellectual abilities and make them physically fit.
Mr Israel Olatunji, a first year student of Computer Science, told NAN that he was hapoy to be participating in chess.
“I recently participated in a chess competition. Of six games, I won four, drew one and lost one.
“I want parents, governments and schools to continue supporting chess competitions. Chess is not gambling as some people say,” he said.
Miss Dorcas Babalola, a second year student of Library and Information Science, said that she was participating in table tennis, badminton, football and javelin.
Babalola hoped that, in the next five years, she would be competing in bigger and international competitions. (NAN)
