THE Lagos Waste Management Agency (LAWMA) on Saturday urged residents to take ownership of their environment through regular clean-ups.
LAWMA Managing Director, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said this at a clean-up at Sura field on Saturday in Lagos.
Gbadegesin said the exercise was important because of the nature of Lagos as a mega city with about 22 million population and counting.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on July 14 flagged off a robust advocacy on community/grassroots daily and weekly cleaning of the environment at Lagos Island.
Sanwo-Olu said it was important that Lagos residents take ownership of cleaning up their surroundings by making it a culture for environmental sustainability.
Gbadegesin said the exercise was in tandem with the directives of the governor to instill the culture of cleaning as a habit for Lagos residents.
According to him, the governor has directed that Lagos residents should take ownership of the cleaning of their environment on a regular basis.
He said the habit of cleaning was important, especially as the state continues to battle the outbreak of cholera.
He described the exercise as a multi-agency collaboration to ensure a greener Lagos with resilient infrastructure that can withstand the challenges of climate change.
He said that about 25 trees would be planted alongside the cleaning of the environment with the Lagos Parks and Gardens.
He appealed to Lagos residents to cultivate the habit of planting trees where they live for environmental sustainability.
He also called residents to ensure responsible waste management to make Lagos a better place to work and prosper.
Also speaking, Tari Taylour, the Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on the Environment, said that the clean-up was in tandem with the vision of the governor to take the advocacy for a cleaner Lagos to the grassroots.
Taylour said the governor was passionate about the cleaning and transformation of Lagos State.
She noted that a lot of community activities take place at the Sura field, stressing that it was important to make it clean.
She urged Lagos residents to imbibe the culture of cleaning their environment for a better and healthier Lagos.
NAN reports that the highlight of the exercise was the planting of trees around the Sura field.
Members of staff of LAWMA, KAI and LASPARK and volunteers were on ground to clean-up the Sura field. (NAN)
