Lawmaker, others urge psychiatric hospital to sustain development, workers welfare

ALHAJI Ahmad Kalambaina, the member representing Kware/Wamakko Federal Constituency of Sokoto State has urged the management of Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital Kware to focus more on infrastructural development and workers welfare.

Kalambaina made the appeal at a reception organised by staff of the hospital and Kware community members.

The reception was in honour of the hospital’s Medical Director, Dr Shehu Sale, who was reappointed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The lawmaker noted that Sale had done alot in the area of employments, infrastructural development and community service, and urged him to do more.

He also advised the medical director to sustain the progress recorded in improving the welfare of workers and their families.

“I want to congratulate Sale for his reappointment as medical director, you and your team piloting the affairs of the hospital have impacted positively on the lives of the citizen.

“The importance of the hospital to the community and society at large cannot be over-emphasized, I urge you and your team to continue to discharge your duties without fear or favour,’’ he said.

Kalambaina called on the various professional associations in the hospital to give the leadership the necessary support to succeed.

The District Head of Kware, Alhaji Muhammadu Dan’iya, represented by Alhaji Mustapha Bello-Kware, a staff of the hospital, also congratulated Sale on his reappointment

Dan`iya said that the reappointment was a recognition of Sale’s good stewardship, and advised him to continue to lead with the fear of God.

He said that the reception was also a demonstration of Sale’s acceptance by the hospital and host communities.

The district head advised him to maintain an open door policy and protect the interest of workers and patients at all times.

He explained that Kware community acknowledged the robust and pragmatic leadership of Sale, and his commitment to tackle mental health challenges in the country.

Dan’iya called for partnership between governments, traditional institutions and groups on addressing cases of mental health disorders in the country.

The district head also noted the transformation in the hospital and called for more support from stakeholders to further develop the facility.

He commended the Federal Neuro Psychiatric hospital for creating public awareness on its activities and its efficient services.

A former Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Abdullahi Ibrahim, expressed optimism that Sale’s reappointment would further facilitate robust enhancement of mental health administration in the facility.

Ibrahim, a Consultant Psychiatrist noted that Sale’s first term ensured upgrade of all departments, provision and installation of modern equipment as well as construction of perimeter fence and more structures in the hospital.

According to him, Sale also facilitated the construction of new molecular laboratory, Intensive Care Unit, Isolation center and accident and emergency unit in the hospital.

On his part, National Chairman, Association of Psychiatric Nurses of Nigeria (APNON), Mr Sani Haruna, said the medical director had ensured that the hospital had the highest number of psychiatric nurses undertaking post basic professional courses during his first tenure. .

Haruna called for more support and collaboration in addressing mental health issues, including substance abuse, suicide and other associated problems.

The APNON chairman noted that some of the problems of the hospital had been tackled by the medical director during his first tenure.

According to him, the hospital is now better in terms of manpower, expertise and services.

Responding, Sale thanked the organizers for the recognition and said it would spur him to do better through proactive engagement of all stakeholders. (NAN)
