Lawyer advocates free education for girl-child

AN Ilorin-based legal practitioner, Mr. Akeem Ishola, has called for free education for the girl-child in the country to change public perception toward girl-child.
Ishola made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin on Friday.
He said that the girl-child education should be encouraged and prioritised. He noted that some parents were seeing girl-child education as an alternative and not necessarily as important as boy-child education.
“Most parents are not ready to invest in their girl-child. They see them as men’s property in the nearest future and not necessarily deserve investing in.
“Government should do something fast by declaring girl-child education free. Let them enjoy the benefits of free education in order to convince most Nigerian parents.
“Girls are not anybody’s property. They are as important in society as their male counterparts. We need to erase that mentality of girl-child education as a waste of money.
“Parents need proper orientation on the importance of girl-child education to society. We need to end the discrimination against girl-child and stop denying them their right to education,” the legal practitioner said.
Ishola, however, called on government at all levels to consider free education for the girl-child in the country.
He advised parents to stop depriving their daughters the right to education in order to make the country better.
The lawyer also called on NGOs, well-meaning individuals, journalists, and concerned citizens to lead the campaign for compulsory girl-child education in the country. (NAN)
