THE spokesperson of Gbagyi Youths Development Association, Karu, Nasarawa State, Mr Gaza Auta, says Local Government (LGs) financial autonomy will facilitate grassroots development and good governance in Nigeria.

Auta said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.

He commended the Supreme Court judgment on Local Government Autonomy, adding that it was a milestone in promoting grassroots development, good governance and democratic decentralisation in Nigeria.

He said, “personally, I commend the seven-justice panel of the apex court in the judgment that the 774 local governments in the country should independently manage their own funds.”

According to him, the verdict will enable local governments to make decisions and take actions without needing approval from the State Governments.

“The LGs can now manage their finances, collect revenues, and allocate resources without state government interference.

“This will boost their independence and direct accountability to the electorate. They can now focus on delivering services and development projects that will lead to better governance and accountability,’’ he said.

He added that LGs would now prioritise projects and programmes that benefited their communities, for instance solving some security challenges in their locality, thereby promoting grassroots development.(NAN)
