Art gallery curator calls for focus on African art works as Christmas gifts

FOREMOST Art Gallery, Ozidu House, curator, has called for more African art works and items to be advertised for gifts during the yuletide season.

The curator, Mrs Keji Graham-Douglas, spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

According to Graham-Douglas, African artists express reality through their art work, with deep emotions, which makes works of art quality gifts for loved ones.

She noted that in recent times, young African artists had been churning out excellent works that had intrigued a lot of the international community.

“At Ozidu House, we believe that art works hold a lot of meaning and we try as much as possible, to support young artists who are doing excellent work.

“We want people to be encouraged to buy these African art work, as gifts for the season and we have even offered price slashes for fashion art items to be showcased,” she said.

Graham-Douglas told NAN that while there was a bubbling art ecosystem in Lagos State, the Abuja art space was yet to be fully explored.

She added that with the help of more stakeholders, especially in Abuja, the space would expand and the necessary conversations will come to be.

According to her, the gallery tries to showcase as many Nigerian artists as possible, adding that all the art works currently on display are from Nigerian artists.

She then told NAN that with the rise of African female artists and conversations around women’s rights, the gallery was looking forward to hosting an open house to celebrate the strength of African women.
