REIGNING Nigerian league champions Lobi Stars of Makurdi on Wednesday lost 0-1 to Cameroon’s UMS de Loum in their preliminary round first leg match of the 2019 CAF Champions League.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Lobi Stars started the game retreating as their opponents piled on the pressure in the match at the Stade Militaire in Yaounde.
However, the home team’s waves of attacks did not have an end result as the first half ended goalless as Lobi Stars survived the opening minutes.
Nigeria’s Umar Zango and Tony Agbaji were the star players for UMS de Loum as the Cameroonians continued to press Lobi Stars in the second half.
Their consistent pressure eventually paid off as they took the lead in the 64th minute of the encounter through a Jean Abadan solo run.
Lobi Stars came out of their shell thereafter, looking for an equaliser which could be a crucial away goal in the tie.
But the Nigeria Professional Footbal League (NPFL) giants introduced Austin Ogunye for Sikiru Alimi and Lively Itodo for David Tyavkase in a bid to rescue the result.
Alex Aghahowa had a chance to snatch a late equaliser but his shot was weak and UMS de Loum held on for a crucial home win.
NAN reports that the pairing’s return leg tie is scheduled to hold in Makurdi next Wednesday.
