BABATUNDE Rotinwa, chairman of the Lagos State Local Government Service Commission, has tasked local governments and local council development areas officials across the state to rededicate themselves to duty in order to have an improved and better service delivery in all the LGAs and LCDAs.
Receiving members of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, Lagos branch, Rotinwa said that since the local government is the closest tier of government to the people, officials should endeavour to be conversant with the needs of the people and do their best to provide the dividends of democracy in order to make the tenure of Governor Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos State remarkable, progressive and successful.
He advised them to improve on their community relations, saying this would enable them identify the needs of the people in order to provide services that would impact on the welfare and facilitate speedy development of their communities.
He recalled that, the Lagos City Hall, now a Lagos Island edifice, was built by the local government because of dedication of the staff of the local government.
Rotinwa implored all staff in the unified local government service to be punctual, dedicated to their duties, adhere strictly to standards set by the Commission and work as a team, so that, collectively, local government staff could contribute to the development of their localities as well as the state in general.
While commending the officials for their hard work and commitment towards the commission, the chairman appealed to all the 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs to set targets for year 2016 and be committed towards realising the targets so that all the lost glory of the third tier of government could be restored.
He urged the union members to ensure that there was harmony between them, the executives and the management.
Earlier, Afolabi Ajose, president of the Lagos State branch of the NULGE, commended the efforts of Governor Ambode, for appointing a high calibre retired public servant with cognate experience in local government administration as the chairman of the commission and erudite and seasoned administrators as members of the board.
He said that, the appointment had demonstrated the commitment of the governor to transform the local governments and improve the process of service delivery of the councils.
