Logger in court for allegedly cheating businessman of N14m

THE police on Tuesday arraigned, a  logger, Michael Hyende,  who allegedly defrauded a businessman of N14million in a  Wuse Zone 6 Chief Magistrates’ Court, Abuja.

Hyende, 43, who lives in Apo village, Abuja, is charged with three counts of criminal breach of trust, cheating and criminal intimidation.

The Prosecutor, Maltida Ugowe informed the court that the matter was reported to the Inspector-General of Police ( IGP), through a written petition by the complainant,  Odera Unaogu.

Ugowe in addition alleged that the defendant convinced the complainant that he could supply him squared logs within a week.

She further said that based on the promise, the complainant on Dec. 15, 2017, entrusted the sum of N14 million to the defendant.

The prosecutor said  Hyende failed to supply the log and instead converted the money to his personal use.

According to Ugowe, when the defendant was asked to refund the money to the complainant, he threatened him.

The prosecution said during the police investigation, the defendant admitted to the crime. Hyende, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Abdulmajid Oniyangi admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N2 million with one surety in like sum.

Oniyangi ordered that the surety must reside within the jurisdiction of the court who must present a valid means of identification which must be verified by the court officials. He adjourned the matter until Aug. 27, for hearing. (NAN)
