THE South-South Chess Zone in partnership with the Nigeria Chess Federation (NCF) and the Akwa Ibom Chess Association are to stage the maiden edition of South-South National Chess Tournament.

The tournament, which has the ratings of the International Chees Federation (FIDE), will hold in Uyo from July 1 and end on July 5.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the tournament will be followed by other events in Port Harcourt and Lagos between July 7 and July 9.

Speaking on the tournament, Austin Apemiye, the Chairman of Continental Development Commission of African Chess Confederation, noted that the event would help athletes develop analytical skills and support strategic planning.

“I urge chess players, particularly from Edo in the South-South zone, to take advantage of the opportunity provided by the tournament in Uyo,” he said.(NAN)
