Maikanti Baru, former NNPC GMD dies

MAIKANTI Baru, former group managing director, GMD, of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, has died.

Maikanti died on Friday night, May 29, after a sudden illness at the hospital.

Kennie Obateru, group general manager,  Group Public Affairs Division of NNPC, confirmed the death of Baru to Realnews on Saturday morning, May 30, expressing shock.

Also, Mele Kyari, group managing director of NNPC, tweeted about his death in  his official Twitter handle, saying he has lost a friend and brother.

Realnews that Baru was appointed as group managing director of NNPC, on  July 4, 2016. On reaching the statutory age of 60, he retired on  July 7, 2019 and was succeeded by Kyari.

Born on July 1959, Baru was a Nigerian engineer, oil marketer and the 18th group managing director of the Nigeria’s state oil firm.  He was educated at the Ahmadu Bello University (1982)m, Federal Government College, Jos, 1978 and University of Sussex.
