BO Svensson has no intention of resigning as coach of Bundesliga bottom club Mainz and has said that success in Wednesday’s German Cup match at Hertha Berlin could ignite a turnaround.

The club’s only victory of the season came in the first round of the Cup in August at second division Elversberg. They have failed to win in their nine Bundesliga matches from which they have taken three points.

Svensson told reporters on Monday that he “completely rules out” stepping down from the job he took in January 2021.

“I don’t think it is appropriate for me to think about it. I am here and badly want us to be successful again,” Svensson said.

Svensson has said he is questioning himself but the club leadership is fully behind him and that it is “very very important to have this backing. But it is clear that it is not forever.

“It is remarkable how you can work in peace. But it is also a fact that I must deliver.”

Svensson said victory at second division Hertha in the Cup could turn the tide.

“This feeling to sit in the dressing room with a victory can give us a lot. It is not an easy task in our situation but we badly want to advance,” Svensson said. (dpa/NAN)
