Man, 34, docked for alleged shop breaking, theft

A 34-year-old man, Ayuba Prosper, was on Thursday arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged shop breaking and stealing.

Prosper, whose address was not given, is facing a two-count charge of shop breaking and stealing.

The police prosecutor, Insp. Oriyomi Akinwale, told the Court that the defendant and others at large committed the offence on Sept. 15 at about 2:00 a.m. at Orelope Junction, Ekute Quarters in Ado-Ekiti.

Akinwale alleged that the defendant and others at large broke into the shop of one Aderibigbe Opeyemi.

He alleged that the defendant and others at large stole 250 pieces of slip-ons valued at N450,000, 200 pieces of sandals valued at N410,000 and 300 pieces of palm slippers valued at N240,000, with total valued of N1.1 million, belonging to the complainant.

According to him, the offences contravene Sections 325 and 302 of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, 2021.

He urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him to study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him.

Counsel to the defendant, Mr Olawumi Olowolafe, urged the court to grant his client bail and promised that the defendant would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Bankole Oluwasanmi, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N60, 000 with one surety in like sum.

He adjourned the case until Nov. 23 for hearing. (NAN)
