Man, 58, faces N350,000 fraud charge in Ogun

A 58-year-old man, Olalekan Awaye, on Wednesday appeared before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun for allegedly defrauding a woman of N350,000.
Awaye, who lives at No.13 Ilo-Awela St., Ota, is facing a two-count charge of obtaining money under false pretence and stealing.
The prosecutor, Insp Abdulkareem Mustapha, told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometime in March 2019 at Sango-Ota.
Mustapha told the court that the defendant promised the complainant, Sowemimo Coker, that he would assist her sell her Volkswagen bus for N350,000, but converted the money to personal use.
The prosecutor said the defendant gave the promise knowing same to be false.
He said that the offences contravened Sections 390(9) and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun,2006.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Senior Magistrate, Mr Mathew Akinyemi, granted the defendant N300,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
Akinyemi said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed with evidence of tax payment to Ogun government.
He adjourned the case till Feb. 5 for definite hearing.
