A 60-year-old man, Richard Akinrodoye, who allegedly obtained N1.5 million under the pretext of purchasing a concrete mixing machine, on Tuesday, appeared before a Sabo-Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

Akinrodoye, of no fixed address, pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of obtaining money by false pretences and stealing.

The prosecutor, ASP Rita Momah, told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometime in 2015, in the Lagos Magisterial District.

She said that after Akinrodoye had persuaded the complainant, one Cyril David, to pay N1.5 million to purchase a cement mixing machine, he fraudulently converted the money into personal use.

Momah stated that the defendant, who had been on the run since 2015, was recently apprehended and taken to the station.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Sections 287 and 314 (3) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates three years imprisonment for stealing, while Section 314 prescribes 15 years for obtaining money under false pretences.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Adeola Olatunbosun, granted Akinrodoye bail in the sum of N500,000, with two responsible sureties in like sum.

She said that one of the sureties must be a land owner and show evidence of tax payments to Lagos Government.‎

Olatunbosun, thereafter, adjourned the matter till Feb. 20 for trial. (NAN)
