AN Area Court in Jos on Tuesday sentenced Benjamin Keke, 28, to one month imprisonment for stealing two bags of columbite.

The judge, Shawomi Bokkos, sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty to the two-count charge of trespass and theft and begged the court for leniency.

The judge gave the convict an option of N10,000 fine.

He also ordered the convict to pay a compensation of N500,000 to the complainant or risk three months imprisonment, on default.

Earlier, the police prosecutor, Mr Daniel Namuwa, told the court that the case was reported by Eliyas Faruk, who wrote to the state’s commissioner of police reporting the theft.

He quoted the complainant as saying that the accused person,  in conspiracy with one David who is currently at large, stole two bags of columbite mineral resource valued at N2,000,000.

The prosecutor further told the court that during police investigation, the convict confessed to the crime and a bag of columbite was recovered from his place.

The offence, he said, contravened the Plateau Penal Code law of Northern Nigeria. (NAN)
