Man remanded in correctional centre over alleged extortion

A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Kano on Friday ordered the remand of a 25-year-old man, Zakari Dauda, in correctional centre for allegedly extorting N40,000 from one Abdullahi Adam.
The Magistrate, Farouk Ibrahim-Umar, ordered the remand of the defendant in Kano Correctional Centre.
Ibrahim-Umar adjourned the matter until March 17, for further hearing.
Dauda, a resident of Sabon Gari Quarters Kano, is standing trial on two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and extortion.
The Prosecutor, Mr Aminu Dandago, had told the court that one Abdullahi Adam of Birgade Quarters Kano, reported the case at Fagge Police Division, Kano, on Feb. 6.
Dandago said at about 6:30 p.m. when the complainant was trekking along Sabon Gari Quarters Kano, the defendant and one Bulus, now at large, blocked him and forcefully collected N40,000 from him.
He said, “In the process people within the area arrested the defendant.”
According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened Sections 97 and 391 of the Penal Code.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. (NAN)
