SOME aggrieved members of the Shiite Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN, clashed with the police in Kano. The report said the clash occurred on Monday, November 14 in the northern city with many already feared dead.
Those reportedly killed so far include many of the Shiite members and a policeman. The report quoted a witness as saying the clash began around Tamburawa, located at kilometre 20, Kano-Zaria road and on the outskirts of the state, just as the police tried to stop their march. The police have since deployed heavily armed mobile police officers to the area while the major Kano-Zaria road is completely blocked.
Daily Trust newspaper also reports that the Shiites were trekking for the annual Arbaeen symbolic trekking from Kano to Zaria Kaduna state Nigeria when the incident occurred. Another report quoted Ibrahim Musa, president of the media forum of the IMN, as saying the attack had led to the death of one trekker while others sustained various degrees of injuries. There is fear that more casualties would be recorded. The report added that the police has reinforced to the scene of the clash while the major Kano-Zaria road and adjoining areas have been blocked. Soldiers have also reportedly mounted a check point at the outskirts of Potiskum, Yobe State, in order to frustrate any plan by members of the religious group to carry out similar trek to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Husain scheduled to commence from Kano this week. The members of the Islamic organisation and the police have constantly clashed following protests by the former over the continued detention of Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, their leader.
