THE Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, has called on the federal government to disarm all armed herdsmen in southeast region. The group promised to live and work peacefully with herdsmen, who have been living peacefully in the region.
In a communiqué issued at the end a meeting with southeast governors, National Assembly members, ministers, southeast clergy, leadership of traditional rulers, Igbo leaders and women leaders, MASSOB regretted that the armed herdsmen have taken over forests and farmlands, destroying farmlands, kidnapping, killing and raping women in the region. The communiqué signed by Uchenna Madu, leader of MASSOB, and Ugwoke Ibem Ugwoke, national secretary, MASSOB, demanded for the creation of one additional state in the southeast to be like other regions in Nigeria.
“South East Governors to determine locations where road blocks are necessary in the South East, especially in emergency situations, with a view to addressing the complaints of our people on many road blocks and extortion in South East. There is serious discrimination and marginalization of South East Federal Civil Servants. We want the Federal Government to look into this. Each State must set up Youth rehabilitation and empowerment fund to address youth unemployment in the South East. South East should set up Monitoring Committee in each State, made up of youths, Igbo leaders, Clergy, Traditional Rulers, Governors representatives and women to monitor compensation and empowerment funds in the South East to be set up by Governors and Federal Government of Nigeria;
“The Igbo Youths and MASSOB note with sadness that Igbo land is being discriminated against in the allocation of Federal infrastructural projects. We note specifically that all the major Federal Roads in Igbo land are in terrible state of disrepair. We, therefore, demand that the Federal Government should immediately approve a substantial intervention fund to complete all these major road projects in the South East. We also demand that substantial allocations be made for major infrastructural projects in the 2021 budget currently before the National Assembly.
“The President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo to lead southeast youths representatives and select Igbo leaders to the presidency to make our demand to Mr. President,” it said.
