CYNTHIA Rowe, Development Director at the British High Commission (BHC), says media plays a crucial role in promoting good governance, serving as a vital link between citizens and their government.
Rowe said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.
She said that the media provided a platform for citizens to engage with government policies, enable the public to comment, challenge, or support policies, ultimately holding those in power accountable.
According to her, the exchange between the government and the citizenry fosters a deeper understanding of government actions and facilitates informed decision-making.
” The role of the media in governance is important.
“The media gives the space to citizens to look at government policies, to comment on the policies, to challenge the policies, to support the policies, and to be heard.
” The media also allows government to communicate what ig is trying to do, and that helps citizens to understand what government is doing and how it works.
“The media plays this really critical role in shaping public opinion and also building trust between government and their citizens,” she said.
According to her, the media’s role in governance reform is incredibly important in this confusing world of disinformation.
Rowe , however, said that media scrutiny would help ensure that those in power are held responsible for their actions, preventing corruption and abuse of authority .
The Director , therefore , said that with media‘s help trust can be built between citizens and government by facilitating open communication and promoting responsive governance. ( NAN)
