MORE than 300 editors are gathering in Ibadan, capital of Oyo State, this weekend for this year’s bi-annual convention of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE, holding from February 28 to March 2.

Venue of the convention is the Premier Hotel. Isaac Ighure, general secretary of NGE, said the convention will, among other things, elect new officers that will pilot the affairs of the guild for the next two years, because the tenure of the Gbenga Adefaye-led executive ended in January this year.  Adefaye had served as the Guild’s president in the past four years.

Ighure said in a bid to ensure a rancor-free convention, the Guild has appointed Mohammed Haruna, a highly respected journalist, to serve as the chairman of the eight-man electoral committee. “Just like Haruna, all the other members of the committee are top-notch journalists and men and women of proven integrity”, he said.

Besides, Ray Ekpu, another eminent journalist and former chief executive officer of Newswatch Communications Limited, will serve as the chairman of the convention. Segun Osoba, former managing director of Daily Times and former governor of Ogun State, will be the special guest of honour.  “His unstinting and constant support for the Guild in all ramifications is indeed invaluable”, Ighure said.

Also expected at the convention is Labaran Maku, minister of information, who will address the convention while Abiola Ajimobi, governor of Oyo State, will declare it open after delivering his welcome address. A gala night/dinner will hold in the evening of Friday, March 1, at 7:00pm during which new members of the Guild will be inducted. Delegates are expected to depart on Saturday, March 2.
