THE Medical and Dental Academics of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto and the University Teaching Hospital had inaugurated a 10-member committee to serve as Branch Officer’s Committee (BOC) in their new trade union.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the new trade union named, ‘Nigeria Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA)’, was registered in Oct. 2022.
The leadership of the NAMDA UDUS/UDUTH on Sunday at a press briefing in Sokoto stated that the new association held its inaugural meeting and appointed the committee to steer the affairs of the branch.
Dr Yahaya Mohammed, the committee’s Chairman, said the major objectives of NAMDA include promoting, protecting and defending a just and proper condition of service for its members.
“NAMDA is to serve as an organisation of medical and dental doctors employed by tertiary health and academic institutions where they engage in academic activities.
“To defend the maintenance of high standard of academic performance and professional practice.
“Promote the advancement of medical education and professional training in Nigeria and protect the advancement of the socio-economic and cultural interest of the nation,” he said.
Mohammed added that part of the NAMDA mandate was ensuring the provision of benefits and other assistance to the members as provided in the constitution.
“It is also to encourage the participation of its members in the affairs of the tertiary health and academic system of the nation,” he added.
Mohammed further said that NAMDA was independent of the ASUU, adding that the association is a trade union registered independently.
“We are not members of ASUU, but we are partners in progress, therefore whenever it takes any decision, we will join them, if it is in the interest of our members,” he said. (NAN)
