MFOH Nigeria facilitates stakeholders' dialogue to protect the rights of indigents in Nigeria

MISS Face of Humanity Nigeria, MFOH Nigeria, recently organized a Stakeholders Dialogue on the Rights of Indigents in Nigeria. The event, which was held at the National Human Rights Commission, aimed to address the challenges faced by indigent populations and find strategies to protect their rights.

The dialogue brought together distinguished guests, activists, experts, and representatives from various organizations, including the United Nations and government officials.

While welcoming guests and participants at the event, Amb. Chika Rita Ezenwa; Miss Face of Humanity Nigeria, stressed the urgency of protecting the rights of indigents, emphasizing the importance of recognizing their fundamental human rights as stated in the Nigerian Constitution and international human rights instruments.

Delivering the keynote address, the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, represented by Agarase Arase, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to protecting human rights in Nigeria and highlighted the significance of addressing the challenges faced by indigent populations. She also emphasized the need for collective efforts to safeguard their rights.

The panel discussions revealed that indigents face multiple challenges such as limited access to education, inadequate healthcare, and a lack of employment opportunities. Participants stressed the importance of collaborative efforts between government agencies, civil society organizations, and the private sector to effectively tackle these issues.

Various stakeholders, including the Public Complaints Commission, Legal Aid Council, and ActionAid Nigeria, presented the importance of legal frameworks and policies that promote inclusivity and protect the rights of indigents. They called for measures to ensure equitable access to education, improved healthcare, and viable employment options.

During his presentation, Amb. Alfredo Miranda; the Ambassador of Mexico to Nigeria highlighted successful strategies employed in Mexico to promote the rights of indigents, offering inspiration for potential solutions in Nigeria.

The dialogue concluded with a set of recommendations to be presented to relevant government bodies and institutions. These recommendations emphasized the need for comprehensive social welfare programmes, increased funding for indigent-focused initiatives, and the establishment of monitoring mechanisms to ensure policy implementation.

Overall, the stakeholders’ dialogue fostered collaboration, knowledge-sharing and the exploration of sustainable solutions. It inspired optimism and determination among participants, aiming to create an inclusive society where the rights of Indigents are protected.
