FERDINAND Mbum, the General Manager, Mighty Jets International FC of Jos, says that the top priority of the club for the 2023/2024 season is to build a formidable and competitive team.
Mbum , who made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Jos, said that any other accomplishment outside of building a strong team would be a bonus.
The general manager told NAN that immediately after he took over the reins of the Nigerian National League (NNL) side, he set machinery in motion to achieve the target.
He said that since football was a game for young and talented players, one of the first things management did was overhaul the team and weed out old players.
Mbum stated that the club decided to scout for young talents to build a strong and youthful side and and that it currently had young players, including two players in secondary school, who were 15 and 16 years old.
“The two young players have played in the league and have been part of the team, and since their debut, they have been playing regularly.
“Nobody gave our team a chance, but if you watch the team, you can attest that we are not doing too badly.
“Promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is not a target this season; we want to use the season to stabilise the team.
“We hope that some of the players will not leave for better teams because we believe that if we stick together, by next season, we will target promotion to the NPFL.
“That does mean that if we get promoted, we will not grab the opportunity, but our priority is to first stabilise the team,’’ he said.
The general manager further said that most of the players in the team had never played professional football before.
He pointed out that the players were recruited as grassroots footballers that they were trained and exposed to professional football.
According to him, anybody who watches the Mighty Jets knows that the team has fantastic young players that will go places in the future. (NAN)
