RETIRED Col. Bah Ndaw, President of Mali’s 18-month Transition Government has named a 25-member cabinet giving major portfolios of Defence, National Security, Reconciliation and Regional Administration to military personnel.

Although Foreign Affairs, Justice, Economy and Finance ministries are alloted to civilians, it is unclear how this composition would sit with internal opposition and ECOWAS, the regional economic group, which has set preconditions for the lifting of sanctions it imposed on Mali.

Seventy-year-old Ndaw is head of the government with Col Assimi Goita, leader of the junta that seized power on 18th August as vice President, while former Foreign Minister Moctar Ouane is Prime Minister of the transition government.
