A 29-year-old motorcycle rider, Salau Maya, who confessed to have robbed a passenger of a bag containing valuables worth N110,000 was on Monday ordered to be remanded in Kirikiri Prison by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

The Magistrate, Mrs A.K. Dosunmu, said the defendant would remain behind bars pending sentence at the next date of adjournment.

The defendant, a resident of Ijoko, Ogun, pleaded guilty to conspiracy and stealing.

According to the Prosecutor, Insp. Josephine Ikhayere, the defendant, committed the offence on Jan. 11, at Abule-Egba, Lagos.

Ikhayere said that the defendant and one other person still at large, conspired to steal a bag containing an infinix phone valued at N80, 000 and cash of N30, 000, totaling N110,000, belonging to Mrs Vivian Iheyi.

The prosecutor said that the complainant boarded the defendant’s motorcycle and  on the way, Maya picked another passenger and both of them robbed Iheyi.

“The defendant, who picked another passenger, stopped his motorcycle for few seconds after claiming that the motorcycle had fault.

“When the complainant alighted from the motorcycle, for the defendant to fix the motorcycle, the defendant and the other passenger still at large demanded for her bag.

“When she refused to surrender her bag, the defendant and his accomplice beat the complainant and snatched the bag from her.

“The duo mounted the motorcycle and sped off,’’ she said.

According to the prosecutor, the complainant boarded another motorcycle.

“ Fortunately, she saw the defendant and his accomplice buying fuel in a filling station.

“Luck ran against the defendant as the complainant sighted him and his accomplice buying fuel. She sneaked to where they were and grabbed the defendant.

“She raised an alarm. The defendant was arrested while his accomplice escaped,’’ Ikhayere said.

The offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that section 287 prescribes three years jail term as penalty for stealing, while section 411 attracts two years for conspiracy.

The magistrate reserved March 14 for judgement. (NAN)
