THE wife of Imo Governor, Mrs Nkechi Okorocha, has stressed the need for the promotion of all aspects of Nigeria’s cultural values and to pass same to future generations.
Mrs Okorocha gave the advice during the 2018 Imo Women August Meeting held at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri on Tuesday.
The theme of the meeting was “Sharing our Common Cultural Values”.
She outlined the importance of culture in the lives of the people, describing it as a way of life.
“We must promote all aspects of our culture which are language, music, food, dance and folklore and always work for the growth and sustenance of the ideology of strength in unity.
“Our cultural values are strongly embedded in the stream of culture; we must drink from it and pass it on to future generations.”
Okorocha said this year’s August meeting was unique as it is her last as the first lady of the state.
She advised Imo women to take advantage of the free education policy of the state government and send their children and wards to school.
She noted that no nation had risen above the education of its people and urged the incoming first lady to safeguard the ideals of the policy to improve on the lives of children.
The governor’s wife also commended the women for their support in her efforts to positively impact on the lives of the people, especially the downtrodden.
” I never took touching people’s lives positively, especially the downtrodden in the society, for granted; but I did not do it alone.
“You, the Imo women, remained with me; with determination, God’s grace and unity of purpose we closed routes that diminished our collective conscience and goals.
“We rather widened paths which led to this success story bearing in mind that the success of one Imo woman is the collective success of all,” she said.
Gov. Rochas Okorocha, in his good will message, commended the women for the significant roles they play in their families and the country as a whole.
She urged them to continue to contribute their quota to the development of the state and country.
Present at the meeting was the wife of the Vice President, Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo, who represented the wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari.
Mrs Buhari commended the Imo women for the unity of purpose and for the success of the 2018 August meeting which, she said, was synonymous with the women of the South-East.
Also present at the programme were the wives of the governors of Enugu, Abia, Edo, Delta, Cross River and Oyo states.
The event featured cooking and dancing competitions, march past, water race and cultural displays by troupes from Abuja, Abia, Cross River, Edo and Enugu states.
Several awards and consolation prizes were also given to different categories of women for participating in the programme. (NAN)
